my Sunday morning

I woke up on Sunday a little too early. I thought it was 8:30. Turned out to be 6:30. Turned out I had nothing to eat for breakfast, either. This meant a trip to the 24 hour grocery store.

The first thing I noticed when I got outside, was that there was no humidity.

No humidity!

All that is good and holy, sweet blessed relief!

The second thing I noticed, was that the sky was heavy with those grey layered clouds that look like a downy quilt. So I quickly bought a couple of bananas and some freshly baked peanut butter cookies and headed up towards a park that sits on the edge of the escarpment.
Here is a [not very clear] view of where I live

The whole area was wet from the overnight rain and I, foolishly not planning ahead, was only wearing sandals so I didn't want to venture too far. As it was, I prolonged pondered my way back up the steep, muddy incline to the road where my car was park and stood feeling the cool breeze and listening to the birds chirping and was eaten alive by mosquitoes.

But, as I looked down at the boadwalk out over the wetlands below,

I spotted this

and then caught sight of this big fella

I need to get myself a good tripod, I think.
And an extra pair of running shoes to leave in the car for those impromptu hikes.

  1. It's just as our mothers told us when we were teenagers who couldn't get out of bed - you miss so much if you don't get up early.... A lovely start to your day, despite the mosquitos!

  4. Is that a beaver? Last August on that road trip with my daughter I saw a beaver running in a valley down below the highway. I thought it was such a cool thing to see. I had never seen a beaver in person before. That's pretty cool!

  6. Rachel: the early morning, before the masses of humanity are awake, is a lovely time of day. there was not a soul around.

SueAnn: of course, that is with a zoom lens, but yes, the view is very nice.

Gilly: it is a lovely area. the escarpment adds so much natural beauty to the urban setting.

Geewits: yes, a big beaver. he was there for at least 15 minutes while I watched him doing his ablutions through the binoculars and camera!

Nora: those cookies were very good (and healthy, don't you think?)

  7. I'm not naturally a morning person but am often up and about around dawn. The feeling of a fresh new day is wonderful, everything waking up around. Love the beaver!

  8. Jabblog: I don't consider myself a morning person either. but every now and then I will simply open my eyes and be fully awake, which makes me wish I could do that every time instead of taking 2 hours to shake off the sleep!

  13. There is something neat about being up very early when you don't exactly have to be, isn't there? Like you, I absolutely HATE getting up early, but once I'm up and functional, I quite enjoy it. I've never seen a beaver in my neighbourhood though.

  16. Cool, a beaver! I love seeing wildlife. I remember the first time I saw a fox in the garden behind my Hall of residence in the UK. It was from afar, but I was so excited.

  19. Susan: he does look huge, doesn't he. I guess that's why I could spot him from so far up.

Gail: well, considering how excited I get with ducks, you can imagine!!

Jazz: done. and I have a new monopod, so next time the beav won't be blurry

Pinklea: I once saw one by the side of the busy road not near a creek. it was the middle of the night and I thought it was a racoon until I saw his tail!

  20. LGS: it did, actually!

XUP: nah, that was pre-breakfast appetizers.

Guillaume: seeing wildlife in a city is truly a wonder.

Char: especially having him sitting right out in the open.

Scott: I take my small pleasures where I can!

SAW: and had I been on that boardwalk I would not have been able to see him. had I been able to get up that slippery, muddy hill the first time, I would not have seen him.

  21. I am soooo jealous. I have never, NEVER seen a beaver in the wild. It pays to get up early, purchase bananas and peanut butter cookies, and head for a wetland area.

I have seen evidence of beavers... but not a beaver. Very cool.

  25. tattytiara: I now have a box in my car with binoculars, my new monopod an extra pair of socks and new running shoes ready to get dirty!

Joanna: the big advantage to being up and about so early (on a weekend) is the lack of traffic and other annoying people!

Oliag: yes, those nocturnal animals head for cover before we've had our breakfast

  26. EGWow: it was very cool. I get very excited when I see a fox and beavers are even a rarer sighting.
