gagnez un cafe

It is Roll Up The Rim time at Tim Hortons!

And after only 3 coffees bought,
I WON!
A coffee.
But still,
I WON something!

Every year from the last week in February until whenever the special cups run out in April, you get a chance to "roll up the rim" of your medium, large or extra large coffee cup and see if you've won a coffee, or donut, or money, or gift card, or laptop, or a 2009 Toyota Venza - oh, I'm breathless with anticipation. I am actually quite happy with the coffee and food. Since I've never won anything more than that, I keep my expectations low. In the coming few days, there will be calculations in the media of your chances of winning each of the prizes depending on which province you live in - and they will vary wildly.
~~~~~~
Three years ago there was an infamous case of two school girls who found an unrolled cup in the garbage. The one who found it, couldn't get the rim rolled up but her friend was successful. They were surprised to see that it was a winning cup for the SUV. The parents got involved and a court case ensued over who actually won the prize - the finder or the roller-upper. Then, the school janitor claimed that it was his cup that was thrown out before he rolled up the rim and that HE should get the RAV4. DNA testing was requested to prove it was his. Eventually, after much debating and media scrutiny and derision and arguing ... Tim Hortons decided to get involved afterall and awarded the car to the family of the girl who found the cup. It was at least an interesting diversion for a few months.
  1. I love Tim's coffee. Reasonably priced and much better, IMO, than Starbucks. I wish we had one in our town. I usually stop at one when I go to the bigger town twenty miles away. Love their Iced Cappucino and the bagels. Whole grain with veggie cream cheese. Yum!
  2. I remember that stupid court case. My thoughts were and still are "If you throw something out, you forfeit all rights of ownership" so I was glad the janitor didn't get the car. Too bad it caused such conflict between the two girls though. Anyways, good luck on winning more good stuff! :)
  3. I would be happy with food and coffee too - other stuff you have to pay taxes
  4. Laughing about the lawsuit...
    Congrats on the coffee :) It's been AGES since I've been to a Tim Horton's!
  5. This is where we will respectfully differ, Susan, over the iced cap. But definitely cheaper and better than Starbuck's
    Caffeinated Cowgirl, thanks. It was even funnier at the time.
    Hannah, and the girls are still too young to drive!
    Char, and you don't even really win the car, I think you have to buy out the lease at the end of the term.
  6. What a goofy story, my goodness humans are interesting.
    We don't have a Horton's anywhere close. So I've never tried it.
  7. Yay! It's always fun to win something. If I ever stumble upon a winning lottery ticket, I hope I'm alone and I will just act like I bought it. It seems you hear these stories all the time.
  8. and stupid, Ruth, but they provide us with hours (or months) of entertainment with their interesting stupidity.
    Geewits, this first win always gets me excited. I start getting frustrated as the month wears on and competitiveness sets in amongst my co-workers.
  9. Ah yes the classic case of Finders v. Losers. I couldn't even believe it went to court - it was a damn car. Sheesh
  10. I've never heard of that chain. Anything would be better than starbucks....when something is very weak, like starbucks coffee, we have a slang expression to describe it. Do you want to hear it? It's not very nice. Are you sure? OK then its:
    "weasel piss"
  11. XUP you'd think it would be a force of habit to get the teeth action on that rim before tossing out every cup.
  12. Delwyn, you think Starbuck's coffee is very weak?
    I find it too strong and bitter.
    "weasel piss" - who knew what that would taste like?! We would say "dirty dishwater".
  13. I've only been to a Tim Horton's once, in Canada. I don't remember the coffee, so I guess it was okay. But the donuts were truly the worst I've ever had in my life. Seriously, I threw them away.
  14. But, you wouldn't throw out your 'roll up to win' cup, would you, citizen, before you'd rolled up?
  15. I ate at a Tim Hortons in New Brunswick once, not too bad. I miss the old fashioned fish-n-chips.
  16. Hard to belive that story is true! I still have never gone to my local Tim Horton's...it is competing with a next door Dunkin Donuts!...now there is a good iced cappucino...
  17. Ed, "not bad" is an apt description.
    I've heard that Dunkin Donuts is good, Oliag. I think I've seen some here, but am not sure if it is the same.
  18. I completely forgot to stop in at Timmy's on the way home! Someone had left a "Roll up the rim" cup on their desk at work just as I was leaving but with the weather what it was this evening, I forgot to stop in.
    I have been very lucky with getting so many "Play again" cups!
  19. I wouldn't mind winning a car, just a little cheap economic one. Can you arrange that for me?
  20. Mudhooks, then there was the year I won nothing, NOT A THING.
    Irene, I think contests only give away SUVs - stupid people. I'd rather a small, economic car, too.
