A fence is a structure that serves as an enclosure, a railing is a structure with a horizontal bar across the top for support.
Other fences are just basic and need a pretty chicken to make it photogenic.
Then there are the old, old fences that will be torn down when this land is expropriated for another subdivision redevelopment.
I'm not particularly fond of these wooden structures surrounding a house
I don't need that much privacy.

a variety of decks
and some areas have fencing already installed to separate the yards, but they are usually rather utilitarian and not always enough...
For me, I prefer the wrought iron look.
and even a wee bit flamboyant.
Very nice!
ReplyDeleteThe last fence was easily my favorite. :D When I was in Puerto Rico I was amazed by all the gorgeous wrought iron fences. I couldn't talk the driver or the rest of the group of 10 I was travelling with to stop so I could take photos though!
ReplyDeleteI like the fence that acts as a trellis, my sister's fence is completely covered by ivy and she has it trimmed and it looks great, but imagine the other kinds of vines you can grow on them. I could get silly thinking about it.
ReplyDeleteNice job! Beautiful fences. Especially love the split rail and the last gate. All are quite good.
ReplyDeleteThant a lot of fences, and some great shots..:-)
ReplyDeleteVery nice collection of fences! Cool work! :D I like most of them, but I love the one with that plant all over it! Cool!
ReplyDeleteAmazing! I love all the different types of fences, around here there isn't alot of variety. Thanks for stopping by.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite is the old rail fence...sad that it is soon to be torn down...In a city though one must have the wrought iron:)
ReplyDeleteThat fourth photo is probably my favorite sort of fence.
ReplyDeletenice work for s.stills, the chicken is a nice touch ;)
ReplyDeleteSuch a great variety. I do love the wooden ones best.
ReplyDeletegorgeous finds - I love the old split rail fence
ReplyDeleteLove the split rail and the wrought iron. Beautiful shots!
ReplyDeleteOur minds ran along the same paths when thinking about this challenge: what's a fence? what's a wall? :-)
ReplyDeleteAnd our tastes agree as well. Those blank walls for privacy...I wouldn't want to live there.
Your iron fence choices are great!
Thanks, Gina.
ReplyDeleteAmy, I would have found that so frustrating, to not be able to stop and photograph.
I bet your imagination would run wild, Irene
Wildback, I really like seeing flowers poking through fences, too.
crazysheeplady, those two are my faves as well. Thanks, Ed.
ReplyDeleteI was surprised at the variety, Colleen, once I started really looking!
Oliag, I will be back in that area tomorrow, so will have to take more pics. I felt quite depressed when I saw all those signs up on the farms that were't there last month.
SAW, isn't that rail a work of art in simplicity! Thanks, Chloe, I was imagining the family gathered in their kitchen watching me creeping up their driveway taking all those pics of the chickens!! Thanks, gigi. I've never noticed a rail fence quite like that one before, Char.
ReplyDeleteSherri, thanks - split rail belongs in the country and wrought iron in the city.
ReplyDeleteI think the lines are rather blurred aren't they, regarding fences, June. I would feel a bit claustrophobic behind one of those high board fences.
That first fence, the netting is so far apart. What are they supposed to keep out?
ReplyDeleteLike the chicken, obviously that fence isn't to keep the chicken out.
Thanks for visiting.
Wow that is a lot of fences. And such beautiful onces too. But my favourite is the first one. I love the natural look.
ReplyDeleteI love love love wrought iron so I really like those last two pictures. Good job!
ReplyDeleteHey, Sanna, you didn't tell me you were taking a picture of my hen, Goldie! That looks just like her and it looks like my fence, sorta, kinda.
ReplyDeleteI like the last one best, but it would never work at my house. I'm not a fancy grillwork house person.
Hi Violet
ReplyDeleteI love the old post and rail fences. It will be a shame when they all disappear...
Happy days
Very nice....and that is definitely one photogenic chicken :)
ReplyDeleteInteresting post. Our fences are of the old and wooden variety, most of the on their way out!
ReplyDeleteCJ xx
That first fence, Ann, is at the edge of the road and I guess to keep the wildflowers and weeds from falling down the embankment - and maybe people from climbing it to/from the highway above.
ReplyDeleteThere are acres of that fencing, Steffie, at this particular 'riding academy'. It is a huge corner lot, Delwyn, I dread to think how many houses or what big box stores will appear there after the re-zoning.
Geewits, I wish I could remember where I found that last one to have another look... Neither am I in real life, Susan, but I have another fantasy life and in that life, this one is all around my garden.
ReplyDeleteIt is rather, Kelly, and I was photographing her, even, not the fence.
I like those old worn out fences on farms, Crystal. They have so much character, but must be a lot of work to keep up.
Those are such wonderful selections for this week's challenge. I love the diversity, but the neighborhood decks and fences look so....competitive? As if they are all trying to outdo the one next to it. 'Keeping up with the Jones' anyone?" lol!
ReplyDeleteI like the first one for it's simplicity. Kind of reminds me of a spiderweb. I also get a huge smile with the photo of the chicken. Without the hen...it's just a.....fence. lol!
Too sad about the old split rails being torn down for another subdivision, though. :(
I live in a sort of small subdivision of 8 houses, but my neighbors are more tolerant and open to farm life and seem to like having cattle, horses, goats, chickens (even roosters! lol!), sheep and llamas around. Thank goodness! :)
I love all your photos. Thank you for sharing the fences you see in your area.
~Lisa
I would love to live in an area that had small farms with chickens and goats and sheep around it, Lisa. As for the decks, I found it refreshing that at least you could see down through the backyards - so many have 8' high board fencing around them cutting you off completely from your neighbours.
ReplyDeleteReally nice choices. I think I like the wrought iron ones the best. They are more open and not so concealing. :)
ReplyDeleteThanks, dibear. Yes, I like the openess of them, too.
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed seeing them all!
