Apart from one intensely rainy day last Friday, we have the most wonderful weather these last couple of weeks. It has been hot, but not so humid that sweat drips out of every pore. The sun has shone. The sky has been blue. It has been perfect summer weather. Except that it is fast approaching autumn. You can tell by the ever encroaching darkness on our blissful, beautiful days.
I love autumn, or if you prefer, fall. I like the crisp coolness, the sweaters, the hot chocolate, the pumpkins, the colours, the stars at night. But I did not enjoy our unbearable summer. I don't like it when it is too hot to actually be outside and do anything. Sitting inside in air conditioned comfort on what looks like a gorgeous day is not nearly as much fun as being outside on what is clearly a gorgeous day. So I almost feel as if this now is the summer I wished for.
If only we weren't losing almost three minutes of daylight every day to enjoy it.
Yes, that is the one drawback about it becoming fall, I agree with you on that. Actually, I agree with you on everything you've stated in this post for the same reasons. I like crispness in the air also, but right now it's warm. Too warm, I think. I want to wear my winter coat :o)
ReplyDeleteI know so many people who don't like Autumn because things die.... HUH??? they simply party on with a flourish and consequently have to sleep for a while. That's how I look at Autumn. The temperatures are moderate with cool, sleeping weather nights. And, living in the northeastern part of the USA, I love the sheer variety of colors, from pine green to the palest of peaches. If only we could NOT have the shortening days that would be better. Jacket weather arrives tomorrow here. Air conditioning yesterday. I love your blog. I don't think I've ever said that, though...
ReplyDeleteOur spring is lurching towards summer, and I am not yet ready. Like you, I find the heat a great trial. Those three minutes each day suddenly become noticeable. I hope you keep having enjoyable weather.
ReplyDeleteMy favourite season is Spring but I like Autumn also. It's only that after Autumn comes Winter and I hate Winter and very low temperatures!
ReplyDeleteThe weather has been lovely for a couple of weeks here too but Summer was rotten! Rain almost every day and cold!

Have a nice and happy day****
I too am enjoying this weather but it also gets me down. I just know that winter is just around the corner!! Sigh!! I am not a fan of the snow or the cold. Geez! Can't this weather just continue until May?? That would be great....thank you!!

SueAnn
Nora: I don't mind the socks and closed shoes, but I am nowhere near ready for that coat.
ReplyDeleteJeannette: I agree - there is still a wonderful flourish of colourful life yet. I don't start dreading winter until November when it really is dark for far too long and all the trees (save conifers) are bare.
...and thanks!
Persiflage: I hope your summer is nice and seasonably warm.
ReplyDeleteMildred: as I write we are having another day of rain... but we had none all summer and far too much in the spring. we are never satisfied.
SueAnn: exactly! though maybe a bit of snow and cold for skating around Christmas. I would much rather have snow than rain. it is the ice I don't like.
I think I could handle winter, with the cold and the wind, the snow and the ice . . . a lot better if it weren't for The Dark.
ReplyDeleteJune: there are some wonderful wintery days and whenever I get depressed about the lack of daylight, I remind myself what it was like when I lived farther north, in Holland, and it was dark from 3pm to about 9am and little snow to brighten it up. that was depressing!
ReplyDeleteWe have a very warm spell right now, it's bizarre. August was a wash out and the end of Sept has brought blue sky, soaring temperatures and masses of tourists!! Crazy!
ReplyDeleteCJ xx
I love autumn too but it is sad we are losing so much time every day to daylight.
ReplyDeleteI like fall okay, but oh how I hate the cold and dark of winter. I don't mind the heat and humidity of summer and really don't much like air conditioning. If I weren't working around my kids' wishes, I'd probably just use open windows and fans all spring, summer, and fall.
ReplyDeleteCJ: pretty soon our concepts of seasonal weather will be all over the map!
ReplyDeleteEG: yes, less time for photographs!
SAW: I love open windows, especially with curtains blowing in the breeze...
Being a night owl, I don't mind the earlier sunsets of autumn. And I LOVE the cooler weather.
ReplyDeleteI hate it when it is too hot to do anything. Trouble is, my"too hot" seems to everybody else's "nice day"!
ReplyDeleteBut our little Indian summer has gone now, and its grey, and autumn is really here. And high winds are promised. With rain.
Still, we might get a few sunny days to see the trees in their glorious colour.
Hi Violet
ReplyDeleteIt is nice to hear your happy voice again... I have missed you...
and as you consider the pros and cons of autumn I am loving the quick slide into summer here in the subtropics...I can walk in the evening before dinner, its still light and warm...and lots to see and enjoy...
We're heading into spring here, but have had some really cold nights this week - am anticipating a glorious summer tho' to make up for the 8,000+ earthquakes we have put up with (do you hear me, Mother Nature? Glorious Summer. Thanks.) :-)
ReplyDeleteSeize those minutes! Light and life are beautiful. May we enjoy.
ReplyDeleteGeewits: there are advantages, to be sure
ReplyDeleteGilly: still waiting for the glorious colours, which should be peeking any day now.
Delwyn: I am so glad you are posting again. I've missed your positive attitude!
ReplyDeleteSaj: you deserve the most glorious of summers. and winters and a bit of calm.
Sandy: the shock of the longer evenings is wearing off, so I am starting to enjoy the coziness of the night. sortof. Am certainly not wasting my too short afternoons!
No, no, I prefer spring. Though autumn isn't so bad now I'm not working, since even in December, when there's such a short day in Edinburgh, I'll get to go out in the daylight.
