  1. The snow laden trees are like sentinels watching over this obelisk like shape memorial! Lovely scene!

  5. A simple monument is all that is needed.
Was this taken at Woodland Cemetery?

  10. This picture is evocative of the memorial and the memory of the fallen standing up to the ravages of weather and time.

  14. I agree that the scene is well balanced and that the snow softens everything.

What I am interested in though, is the dedication on the obelisk. It says 1956 to 1966. I think that the Hungarian uprising was in 1956, but I did not realise that it went for ten years. Is that so? Did it go for ten years? I thought somehow, that the Hungarian people rose up against their communist (Russian or USSR) oppressors, but within a few weeks it had been quelled by overwhelming military might.

I would love to know more. Yes, I could google it ... but that also overloads me ...

  15. Julie, I was a little confused about that, too. I tried googling it and am now overloaded! I think it might have something to do with the Sino-Soviet Split. The dates 1956-66 kept popping up, but I couldn't pin point anything. So, the short answer, no it didn't go on for 10 years, but he problems between the Soviets and China did and I guess Hungary was caught in the middle.

  16. It's very pretty with the snow.

I hope your cold gets better. I was feeling bad last week too. Hopefully next week will be warm and we can do some grave-digging. ;)

  17. The fighting in the Hungarian Revolution was a few weeks. According to Wikipedia, 23 October, 1956 to 10 November, 1956.

I'm guessing the 1966 date is from the release of political prisoners and the return of refugees to Hungary.

  18. so pretty, with the snow!
now im curious about that year too.... i read an entire, very thick, book about the hungarian uprising. it was interesting, but also very, very boring (it was so badly written!). i guess i could look it up there, but its back home, in the netherlands!
i do have an hungarian friend, but i noticed they dont like to talk about this awful part of their history..

  19. I read a fair bit about it online (and it was also a bit boring), but came away none the wiser, really.
