how to stretch your vacation time in an unpleasant way

By December 24th my final flight arrangements for a short trip to New York City were finalized.
Some stupid person didn't want the (by now quicker and less stressful) extra travel time to Buffalo, so opted for a Toronto Pearson departure. Hours of waiting only to have your flight cancelled due to... hours of waiting.
Hopefully this insanity will be over, or seriously diminished, in the next 10 days.
Seriously.

  1. I hope it's settled down by February when I have to go to DC

  2. It's a crazy world, isn't it? My hubby used to travel weekly for business. He is so glad to be retired.

  3. What are you going to the city for, and when? I can recommend some great places to eat in Manhattan and Brooklyn...

  4. It is beyond crazy! I don't know what else to say. Sigh!!!
    Hugs and good luck

  5. What is a Pearson deprature? I'm not making the connection here. (No pun intended)

  6. Geewits: Pearson is the airport in Toronto - had I chosen to drive over the border in a cab to Buffalo it would have been much, much easier.

  7. SueAnn: and think of the extra cost for all this extraordinary security - the RCMP (Royal Canadian Mounted Police) do not come cheap, but they have been added for more security

  8. Mr Nighttime: I'm only going to see an exhibit at MoMA, now I'm wondering about the folly. so yes, good eats, please!

  9. Jenn: flying used to be an exciting experience, a way to get somewhere quickly. after watching the news last night, some could have driven to Chicago or NYC or Minneapolis, even, faster!

  10. Char: I hope so, but then how long have we been taking our shoes off... and has anything ever been found in those shoes...?

  11. I really suck at geography so I just looked that up on Google Earth. It looks like it would have been an expensive cab ride. Or would you have driven to near the border and then taken a cab over?

  12. Geewits: yeah, I thought I should have clarified that for you after I wrote it....
Buffalo is about an hour away (with border crossing) and the [Toronto] airport is about a half hour away. there are special airport limos for a flat fee - which would be about the same amount for either airport.

Some say that it was discovered in GaGa's Record Label's headquarters.

  16. Naomi: I'm glad I'm old enough to remember when air travel was thrilling and special. and thank you!

    Ian: wise decision

SAW: thanks. I don't think the hassles are as bad for internal US travel

Diane: at least there shouldn't be as many flight cancellations by the time I go. but not being able to leave your seat or have anything on your lap (not even a book, at this time) will be a drag. I'll have to finish reading it during the 3-4 hour wait to board!

  19. UGH! Not fun! I hope the trip worked out after all. Wish I could have gone with you, but under those circumstances! :)

  20. Susan: it seems to be only really strict for international flights, so you would have been okay. but 3-4 hours before a 7am flight that should take 1hr 20mins, not to mewntion the 'pat down' and nothing in your lap for the last hour.

next time, I drive and park my car at a Jersey hotel.

  21. I doubt things would have been much better out of Buffalo - by the time you cross the border...and then there's that whole actually being in Buffalo thing...ewwww

  22. XUP: at least it would be dark, so I'd really only have to deal with the airport, which isn't bad at all, but yeah, it's a tough call.

  23. "next time, I drive and park my car at a Jersey hotel."

Smart woman. Just avoid the Turnpike if at all possible. I take it you've used the PATH system from NJ to NYC before?

  24. Mr Nighttime: Nope. But I am flying into Newark and a hotel limo will whisk me into Manhattan. (a Christmas present, that limo!)
I'm thinking ahead for my summer excursion.

  25. Ooh, a limo! I never told you, but in the summer before the start of my senior year in college, I drove a limo to make extra cash. It was a great paying job, all under the table, and made most of my money in tips. On occasion, especially since I started towards the end of prom season, I would occasionally get tips in the form of, ahem...recreational pharmaceuticals.

It was a good summer. Great talking with you yesterday.

  26. Sorry to hear that. It must have been quite stressful.
