we're sorry for the inconvenience

Today is the day that management is sorry for the inconvenience but they are going to take away all our water between the hours of 9 am and 5 pm while they work on the neverending plumbing issues of a 50+ year old building. The notice that came around last night may not have been worded exactly like that, but close enough.

Co-incidentally, today is the day the temperature climbs to somewhere around 36 celcius with a humidex hovering somewhere in the 40s (36 C is 96.8 F and 43 C is 109.4 F  I'm sorry but those F numbers sound more like radio stations than temperatures - this morning you are listening to the gentle hum of 96.8 on your FM dial and later this afternoon tune in to 109.4 for the sounds of leaves wilting...)

And what a light show we had overnight. The warnings of thunderstorms came through around 1:15 am and once the lightening got going it just kept on and on. It was pretty much continuous for almost an hour. No stopping to catch its breath, no pausing to confer with thunder to see if he was even bothering to keep up. Lightning did not care. Most of the time, I couldn't even see the lightning bolts, it was just intense and overlapping flashes of light that seemed to be an umbrella over the whole area. It was like when you see a television reflection flickering on the walls and ceiling in a dark room. It would have been a fast paced action movie. I do not believe I have ever seen anything quite like it before. And we even had a tornado warning, which thankfully did not actually materialize. We get tornado watches, but not often warnings.

At the moment, my place is still in shade and is cool with a nice breeze blowing. Now, I'm off to fill up the kettle and the water jugs and prepare for an afternoon in hades because I took all my blinds down yesterday in preparation for the new ones to be installed... on Thursday. By then the heat and humidity will have broken. Actually, maybe I won't bother filling the water jugs, I'll just leave for somewhere with other hydrating liquids and A/C.

I'll let you know what happens.

You had me laughing out loud at this one...

And the lightning show - sounds so cool!

Hot hot hot here in Montreal today - but I'm happy because, well I'm finally warm.

  2. Oooh, being without water all that time is something we in the modern world just aren't used to. I think I'd be struggling to cope!

We've had a lot of rain today in north England, but really need lots more for our fields. It's been so dry everywhere.

  3. We had a thunderstorm last night too. Lots of lightening as it passed overhead. Not quite as dramatic as yours, I think. Good luck finding a nice and cool and liquidy place.

  4. Jazz: I am so very happy that it is hot, too. not complaining... yet.

Crystal: the worst part is that they really stretch the 24 hour notice into a paper left at you door sometime within the 24 hours - many people may not get it if they don't happen to leave their apartment.

Nora: the lightning was pretty cool. I really wanted to be outside to watch it, but thought better of it.

  5. I hope it isn't as bad as it sounds it might be. Thinking of you . . .

  6. Jabblog: actually, it wasn't that bad. a soft breeze blew all day and I got out of doing any household chores like laundry and dishes ;)

  7. Yeah, but in the winter, Fahrenheit numbers don't seem so bad as negative Celsius numbers... ;-)

  8. MrN: then again, it is wonderful to have the numbers start going in the other direction and to lose the minus sign in the spring. it is unbelievably exciting! so exciting that for weeks, we will say it is plus 2 (or whatever number), just to accentuate it.

  9. I finally got some vegetable seeds planted so hopefully this hot humid weather will get them growing. I like to sit out on hot evenings but this heat wave has brought mosquitoes out in droves!!

  10. Ruth: good for you! I went to a garden centre and bought some vegetables and herbs (even though every year I say I won't bother...) I love that it feels so warm and I haven't seen any mosquitos yet.

  11. And here we shiver, but our news told us about extremely high temperatures in the Chicago area, and that there were warnings about the effects of global warming. No matter. Our Opposition says it is all scare talk.
I did not think you got such hot weather so far north.

  14. Oh I think I'd fill up everything just to be sure. water is so precious & its not until it is taken from us that we realise that.
You have been plummeted straight into hot weather by the sound of it.
Don't like the sound of those tornadoes and the thunder sounded awful. I hate it. (Bit scared if the truth was known.)

  15. I've been hearing about your fearsome heat on the news, while here in B.C., our permanent forecast seems to have become 'gray and cloudy with the chance of occasional rain!' Wouldn't it be lovely if we could somehow hit a middle ground in all of this...LOL?

I do hope you've found ways to keep cool...:)

  16. We have lost water to our 120 year old building since yesterday, plumbers have cut something and now they don't know where or what it is! All my excitement about flushing loos and now we can't!!

  20. You're going to be in the 40s (C)? And to think I was thinking of moving to Canada to escape the heat.

  21. Well, that just shows the variousness of the world because here in Scotland it's cold and wet. 14 degrees or something. And it's June! Gah!
