SundayStills - odds and ends

It was mild on Christmas Day, the temperatures around 6C or 42F and still no snow. (odd for an Ontario winter) But it was not particularly quiet. The tree branches were squeaking as they rubbed against each other in the wind, the geese were honking while flying frantically overhead as they tried to scream at one another

over the noise of the waves crashing.

I went for a walk along the waterfront to capture the scene. Along the way I met a few other brave foolhardy souls, one couple who saw the waves from the Skyway and had to get off the highway to take photos. I took one of them standing in front of the breakwall and tried not to laugh as they ran from the spray. We were all suitably impressed. We all got wet. The above photo is an untouched version, but I thought it looked too grey, so I played around with the settings to highlight the waves

Then I came home and dried off, put on my new flannel jammies and had some spiked egg nog. And watched March of the Penguins, and was pleased with my lot in life. At the time, I thought: what an appropriately odd ending for the day.

SundayStills had no particular theme this week (or so I read it!) so check out what everyone else came up with and be surprised.

  1. It's like that here today - not terribly cold but blustery. I'm huddled in with a stack of movies.

  3. the waves look rough! Did you get wet or damp from the mist in the air?

  5. Great shots; I can almost feel the damp spray from here! Flannel jammies and a drink and movie sound like a great way to relax and warm up.

Those were some hefty waves you captured there! Great shots! I especially like the ones with the spray coming over the seawall.

  20. It is always interesting to see what the weather is doing when it is on the other side of the world. Wild waves and snow there, but here we have welcome rain, cool weather, and expectations of dreadful heat waves and bushfires. I have views of our harbour, but seldom see waves.

  30. Cats can sleep in unusual positions. LOL! The waves look cold, especially when spashing so high! I think your snow went south for Christmas.

  31. Jewel: it wasn't as cold as you might expect - see, no ice on the breakwall

Lew: you may be right - I thought we'd get through Dec without any snow, but some finally fell yesterday.

  32. I saw your spray and I thought of all those images from northern Europe where the spray freezes. These are wonderful B&W images, just perfect for the contrast of the dark water and white spray. Nice work.

    Happy New Year!

  33. Ruth: thanks. it was fun to play with the contrast since I didn't have time to think about it while shooting.
