Monday AMuse

The Mariposa Folk Festival is now 50 years old and to celebrate, the city of Orillia (where the music festival began) has 50 7' tall guitars painted by local artists scattered throughout the downtown streets. My friend Suzanne and I spent considerable time finding them all, but you will be pleased to know I will only present a tiny sampling for your amusement.

The one on the left is called Mariposa Folk. The one with Gordon Lightfood is called called 'Feelin' Sundown' (below is the backsides)

and then there is Forest Folk

and here we have Guitars through the Seasons (note the lovely convertible in the background!)

but then we have this most elaborate one

called Dances While Balazs Plays

If you really, really want to read more about this and learn about every single one of the 50 guitars, you can download a pdf of the booklet here

  4. That is really neat. What nice way to show the folk art. There are dozens of life sized folk art mules around here I don't think I'll ever find them all though.

Kaori: it is so much fun to find them all... and to see if you recognize the artists

James: and it is surprising, how with their size and even with a map, you can miss some!

  9. Those are some awesome guitars, regular works of art. Are they auctioned off? I wouldn't mind having some of them.

  10. Scott: the best psart is that, unlike in a big city, these are much closer together. every time you turn around there's another one!

Guillaume: and I understand you are getting elephants in London?

Nora: you have until Thanksgiving before they are auctioned off

  14. Mo: aren't they, just?! thanks for visiting

SueAnn: some of the symbolism was more apparent than others, but they are all great

EG: I knew I had a blog post when I saw them! they are up until Thanksgiving weekend. there is also a great display of banners (unrelated to Mariposa)

LD: it also gets people talking positively about something -
    civic pride at its best.

Geewits: it is fun. and people always smile indulgently when you stop in their way to take pictures!
