taste for coffee

I miss my coffee. I don't drink nearly as much as I used to (I even used to manage a coffee shop) and it never really gave me that buzz that most people claim to get. No jolts awake in the morning. No jitters. Though, sometimes, once I started cutting back, I would notice that I would be unable to sleep if I drank my first cup in the afternoon without starting off slowly in the morning. But I always enjoyed it. Even when I drank it out of habit. My early morning start to the day always included a stop at Tim Horton's - only because it is pretty much the only place open at 2am. And my afternoon walk would invariably end up at one of my two favourite cafes nearby. Any shopping outing always included a rest stop and a reviving, steaming, mug of joe. I would be looking out for a place to get my coffee long before I started looking for whatever brought me to the shopping centre in the first place. I have a new favourite coffee place that involves a 12 minute drive into another city. Atmosphere with my coffee is very important.

Generally, the first sign that I might be coming down with something is my lack of taste for coffee. This time, there was no warning - one morning I simply woke up, threw up and things went downhill from there. Twice I bought myself a coffee to savour while sorting out my newspapers and both times, I found it very much lacking. Both times I thought, well, that was a huge waste of $1.52. I'll not do that again. Even if it is "roll up the rim" time at Timmy's. Even if my first cup WON me a 'donut'.

Now, I simply have no taste for it. No desire. In fact, it almost makes me feel sick again, just thinking about a coffee. I feel so lost.

And don't tell me to replace it with tea. I also love tea, but it is a very different drink. They are not interchangeable. I grew up with tea as an after dinner drink and coffee as a separate entity later in the evening. I still think of tea as a drink that accompanies a meal and coffee that is almost a meal in itself. Many, many foods do not go well with coffee, but most will not be burdened by the light, refreshing taste of tea.

Maybe if could stop munching on these Ricola cough drops my taste for coffee (and other foods) would return.

  1. You may be relieved of your caffeine habit and that may not be a bad thing, so maybe it's a blessing. Maybe there's another kind of flavored tea that you might like to drink instead that you don't associate with food. I'm hooked on caffeine myself and can't make it through the day without it. I'm a wreck if I try. I would have to get very sick to have to want to do without it.

  2. Nora: what are you doing awake at this time of day/night?!!

  3. My attitude towards coffee and tea is quite similar to yours: coffee's practically a meal, tea is more of an accompaniment. I do enjoy my café au lait (more than most teas) though, and I would really miss it if I lost the taste for it. I would agree that your lack of interest in coffee right now probably has something to do with your recent illness - so get completely well, already!

  4. I don't drink caffeine but do enjoy a cup of decaff coffee. Hope you manage to get yourself right soon.

  5. I don't get the whole coffee thing, I find the taste of it vile. On the other hand, I understand your pain, I'd feel totally out of whack if I lost my taste for tea.

  6. Pinklea: I am working on it. at least I can now lay down without coughing up a lung.

Crystal: I have never quite gotten the taste of decaf

Jazz: I am a bit of a coffee snob, I will admit. I find Starbucks to be vile.

  7. I like both coffee and tea and I agree they are different and not interchangeable. But tea is a healthier option.

  8. I was going to say what Jazz said except I was going to say "beer" instead of "tea." I hope you feel better soon!!

  9. I love coffee also, maybe too much. Tea is ok but it is not coffee. I drink tea in the afternoon sometimes. I am glad to hear that I am the only one that does not think they are interchangeable.

I hope that you get better soon.

  10. I love my coffee, too. And you're right, tea is a totally different drink, even if you put milk in it. It just doesn't have the smoothness, the roundness of coffee. There have been a couple of times when I lost my taste for it, and went off it for a while, but I always come back. Now, I'm thinking I may have to give it up because of the acid reflux. ((SAD)). No it isn't the caffeine as most people think, It's the skin itself. Same for chocolate, it's the cocoa bean skin. Gpd! How can one give up the only two vices in her life?!! I may just have to suffer.

I'm sure once you're off the Ricola, your taste for it will be back. Even though I love them, Ricola does that for me, too. Hope you're better soon. :)

  11. Of course, I meant God, not Gpd! Sheesh.

  12. Being British, tea is King! I start the day with tea - coffee is too heavy. Though strangely enough, when I am on holiday, I drink coffee at breakfast. Maybe something to do with not getting up so early, and already having had a cup of tea!

But then I drink tea with no milk (unlike 99% of British tea drinkers) and coffee black - most people drink it with milk.

I've never got the hang of all these new types of coffee - skinny latte, latte, half and half mean nothing to me!!

Maybe I should try - we now have a Strbucks and a Costa coffee in our town!

  13. I'm sorry you're not feeling well. I agree that coffee and tea (both of which I like) are not interchangeable.

  14. Cough medicines and coffee just don't go together. I'm sure you'll regain your taste for it once you're finally better again. I am addicted to black coffee (I love black tea too, but at different times of day) - but my taste for coffee is always the first thing to go when I've fallen sick or indeed pregnant. Just shows that it's probably full of nasties - but it tastes too good to keep away from permanently! Get well soon.

  15. I don't believe I can think of ONE time when coffee didn't perk me up and bring me back to life. It seems that when all else fails, there is coffee - its flavor, its fragrance, its warmth. 24/7, it is my staunch companion beverage. I hope you start feeling better soon. Life is not so rich when coffee is poor.

  16. This is the kind of post I like! Coffee needs to be a little sweet, with creamer for me and I'm good. Except that I'll need something like a piece of cake or a cookie to make the whole coffee-drinking ritual complete. More satisfying would be to drink my coffee in a dainty fine bone china floral cup, and the company of a coffee-drinking friend!!! That'll get your taste for coffee back, VioletSky. I've had bouts when I'm off-coffee, but the yearning for it returns...trust me.
