Sunday Stamps

are you all tired of Titantic by now? is this too last century, or too last week, even?!
actually, I already had my poetry stamp post ready for Viridian and I didn't get these stamps until last Monday...

they are big, so you have to be careful about which postcard you put them on.
it is best to stamp it first, then write.

  1. Ah......... Titanic. Yes, it looks good on a stamp.
They have plugged it to death over here but I think some of the programmes made me quite sad because it was awful to hear of the individuals who died. Always terrible when you get to know about their individual lives and identities.

    1. I watched the Julian Fellowes version and did not enjoy it (I thought I might as I thoroughly love Downton) but as you say, you get to know theses people and it makes it more real.

    1. yes, a smaller stamp would not have done it justice.

  3. I was tired of Titanic the 3rd time I heard Celine wailing a decade ago, god I wish she would Go On. As for the recent rash of commercializing it I expect they have made more off the Titanic than the company ever made or spent on her.

I have never actually seen that movie and again, on behalf of all Canadians, I apologize for Celine.

  8. Poetry AND Titanic:

    Well: while was fashioning
    This creature of cleaving wing,
The Immanent Will that stirs and urges everything
    VII
    Prepared a sinister mate
For her — so gaily great —
A Shape of Ice, for the time far and dissociate.
    VIII
And as the smart ship grew
    In stature, grace, and hue,
In shadowy silent distance grew the Iceberg too.

Part of Convergence of the Twain by Thomas Hardy.
American TV had "a Night to Remember" on recently- a MUCH better movie than the Cameron one.

    1. now, if only I was aware of this poem last week. thank you!

  9. I'm frankly tired of the Titanic and I think it's been milked for all it was worth. It's time to let go people. We're over romanticising. I thought the movie was okay but nothing to write home about. It was basically a bad love story.I saw it once and never again. Even here in the Netherlands a big deal was made out of the anniversary of the Titanic sinking while there were only a few Dutch people on board. There have been other tragedies since then.

    1. yes, it has been overdone a bit, I agree.
apparently it became such huge story in the media because it was the first major event of the century that would only be eclipsed by the Great War.

  10. These are brilliant stamps! I love how giant they are - so fitting! A beautiful image too, and of course I love the map detail in the background. Just lovely!

  12. I used to work in Southampton and there the Titanic story affected so many lives, mainly families of crew members. They have small memorials/plaques and so on all over the city. I found it quite moving to come across one, say, to the musicians on board.

    1. I wouldn't go to Halifax to see the museum and memorials there, but if I found myself in the city and it was say raining, or snowing... I would likely check it out.

  13. Wow they are big stamps. The UK, Isle of Man etc seem to have gone the miniature sheet route. I recently watched a documentary taking it from the view point of the iceberg. From the first snowfall, its formation into ice and over a vast period of time eventually breaking free from Greenland and it journey south to its destiny. It was an inventive, and interesting take on the theme.

    1. that would be an interesting point of view. I read a satirical article from the iceberg's POV which was enjoyable (can't remember where I read it, or who wrote though!)

  14. I think they are really cool and I've not seen any other countries making them. I like larger stamps, but you're right that it's best to place them first before writing! :) It was very kind of you to offer one to me--would you be willing to swap postcards, so I can send one and some pretty stamps in return? My email: literarycat@hotmail.com. Best, Danielle
