poppies

I chose the theme of peace and unity for this week as it is the 70th anniversary of VE Day. I soon discovered that none of my military stamps seem to commemorate the end of the war. That was not the only peace I had in mind, still, I didn't want anyone to feel they couldn't contribute and sharing a favourite stamp is also an optional theme.
This is my newest favourite.
The poppy is a unifying symbol and the poem an anthem of the sacrifices of all who fought in the First World War. It is part of Remembrance Day services in many parts of the world.
The stamps were issued on the 100th anniversary on May 3rd, 2015 with the sheet also showing the poem written in John McCrae's handwriting.

  1. That's a beautiful stamp. I think it conveys the poignant message very well.

  3. I hadn't thought of poppies - and I love them. They make for a beautiful stamp sheet.

  4. This is another great addition to the many outstanding poppy stamps issued by a few countries. Interestingly, the poppy is not a big symbol of commemoration of soldiers here in the US.

  5. I have thought of the UK stamps of poppies, but I find them sad, as this one. Beautiful (especially with the poem), but sad because of the theme. Poppies are not a symbol in Spain, as FinnBadger said for the USA.

  6. They just renovated the John McCrae museum here in Guelph. Haven't been yet but I can't imagine it could have changed all that much. Those are both lovely stamps.

  7. A brilliant stamp and a marvellous poem by a man who was there.

  8. Wonderful stamp with the poppy petal on it. I like how it's used as a background for the silhouette of the military man and the crosses. The birds beside gives the stamp a serene feeling on it.

  9. That's lovely, both the image and the reminder.
