Sunday Stills - Lines

Today's Sunday Stills challenge was LINES.
My view is full of lines. Here is a closeup.

Burlington Canal Lift Bridge

There have been five different moveable bridges located on this site since 1830. The present bridge was opened in 1962 and carries two lanes of traffic across the canal. The canal, at the western edge of Lake Ontario, was among a series of waterway projects begun 200 years ago, to provide navigation from Lake Erie to the Atlantic Ocean. Today the Burlington Canal remains a busy waterway, although with the recent shutdown of Stelco by US Steel, it may be less busy.
The bridge structure is a tower driven, moveable bridge with a vertical lift of 110 feet. The navigation season usually runs from late March to late December, so any day now the first of the approximately 6500 vessels that will pass through will be appearing.

The underside of the bridge on a day with no traffic.
That's what the other bridge, the Burlington Skyway, right beside it is for.
For more Sunday Stills from around the world.

  7. Thank you Ed and Andrea. Bridges fascinate me.
LaceyJo and Citizen and I like the views from underneath bridges, too. It actually reminded me of a meccano set, Char.

It was painted last year, J9, so still looks a bit fresh.

  16. Thanks for the link to Sunday Stills.

Living near a harbor myself, I'm always fascinated by bridges abroad.

Does it actually read "Canada" on that last bridge shot?

  17. Shirley, I can now see it does look like an abstract (now that so many people have mentioned it). Thanks, Kelly, it would have been rather stark without those circles.

You're welcome, Peter. Yes, it does say Canada on the side. (Just in case one had a poor sense of direction!)

  24. This is such a lovely bridge. I think I have 25 pictures of it at least. There are Perigrine Falcons nesting on the tower you have shown in the first picture. I was there again last week to try and find them, but without success. So I just take more pictures of the bridge. If you walk out to the lighthouse you can see Toronto's skyline.

  25. That's beautiful! How did you get photos with no traffic?

And, this is the first time that I've ever been to a blog that my location showed up as the actual (or at least closest) location that I live! Awesome!

  26. It was a deceptively cold day when I walked over there to take these pictures, Ruth and I wondered if the falcons had returned but couldn't find them. The ones at the Sheraton in Hamilton are back and the webcam is up.

  27. You're always welcome Kylie from wherever you are!! Actually, I wondered if there was someone new when I saw that address a minute ago.

Anyway, the bridge has a lot less traffic because that road runs alongside the highway and mostly goes along the Beach Strip, so only local traffic use it. I also waited patiently for everyone to disappear out my way.
