just another cold winter's day

We in the northern hemisphere are experiencing a bitter cold snap. You may have read a few complaints, or observations, or thoughts about this on other blogs.

I thought I'd try to see some positive points of it being so cold.

...

...

...

Well...

You can leave butter on the counter and it won't melt into a liquidy, messy, softness.

Anyone else have a positive spin?

Then, I had a look at Russell's blog from Iowa.
He managed a photo of a sundog which I had completely forgotten about.

Beauty in extreme cold.

Then there is this photo of snow in Norway that looks almost blue from the cold.

  1. We're experiencing your snap down here in central Ohio, too. Though it's not as snappy here. Our low last night -5F. That's plenty cold enough for me! It's a challenge keeping the chickens happy in their coop so they won't peck each other. I've been making lots of trips to the barn and to gather the eggs so they won't freeze.

    Stay warm!

  2. Um... you can put your frozen food on the balcony and defrost your old freezer.

Of course who the hell still has a freezer that needs defrosting...

  4. I can't help myself, even after freezing my butt Sunday, I was in love with it driving to work.

And I wish WE were home to gather eggs before freezing!

And I hope the heat lamps stay on in the breeder box - 8 new chicks, ah we're so excited. I feel like a first time grandma!

  5. Susan: no board games for the chooks?

I'm loving learning about these creatures! Never thought about the eggs freezing. I guess they don't sit on them? The stupid things an urbanite does not think of, eh?

  6. Jazz: I knew you'd have as much trouble as I did thinking up something!

Char: I'm taking January off next year. Somewhere with a warmner, healthier climate

  7. Ruth: you sound downright EXCITED about this.

  8. You can transport your frozen foods from the supermarket without fear of them defrosting before you get home.

Now, I must get before I turn into a humansicle...

  10. I just got back from the Northern Hemisphere and loved the cold - you could wear hats and gloves and scarves, the sky was clear and pale blue (sundogs look great but I've never seen one), the sun sat low in the sky creating beautiful shadows. Admittedly we were just visiting the cold, plus it gets much colder in North America than Europe, so I do sympathise! Meanwhile it's been 104 degrees here in Australia the last couple of days!

  11. You're going to get a comment from Geewits reminding you that Texas is in the northern hemisphere

  12. Yes, I love snow but cannot say I miss deep cold. That said, winter is a beautiful season, aesthetically. And at least one can expect cold. When we reach temperatures like this in April, it is worse, I think.

  13. Scott: Welcome home. Loved your travel pics. And if I have a choice, I'll choice the cold over the heat.

  14. XUP: ...oops. and quite right, too.

Guillaume: snow in the countryside is beautiful. and maybe the dry cold isn't so bad...

  15. Hmmm. How about the cat is a lot more friendly and willing to cuddle?

  16. My biggest positive about the cold is that I can stay inside and play Wii with my kids instead of playing outside, which I actually don't like to do.

  17. LGS: unfortunately my cat is quite willing to cuddle in a heatwave if she thinks she'll get an ear scratching out of it. But, yes, it is very nice to have that warm little body warming your lap, or feet.

  18. Kylie: I've never played Wii - I fear I might be too unco-ordinated.

  19. the butter won't melt on the counter!!! Funny!! haha..

I've been thinking ah...positive spin.. tough one..

oh, here's one... the concrete floor is really warm by the woodstove and if you stand there it soaks into the bottom of your feet and slowly warms up your whole body.. that is, if you can get near it for dogs , a boy and a man, hockey gear, boots.........

  20. Well, you probably don't need a fridge in a winter like that - so what you use on heating you could save on refrigeration!

Sending you sunshine and clear skies - and warmth!

  21. Gwen: There's too much blocking the heat by your woodstove!

Vanilla: Oh, Thank You, Thank You... today is particularly frigid (though we got the sunshine and clear skies)

  23. beautiful Norwegian photo, and I have never knowingly seen a sundog... only once been in temps that cold - far prettier to look at from the warmth inside.

  24. Katie: I've never seen a sundog either, I don't think, but I had heard about them ... so maybe I have??

I just love Ivar Ivrigs photos.
