"Try it on" she said, hopefully
"Look, it fits perfectly" I said, sceptically
"It looks good on you, matches your hair" she said, animatedly
"It is gorgeous" I said, fatefully
"Then you must have it" she said, determinedly
"But ... but ... it is so not me ..." I said, helplessly
"It could become you" she said, theatrically
"I would never wear it, where would I wear it?" I said, wonderingly
"I don't care what you do with it, wear it shopping, use it as a throw, cut it up into a teddy bear and a hat, give it away ... but it is yours" she said, finally

And so I ended up with a fur coat.
It would have been insulting, finally, to not accept this generous offer. My friend was clearing out her late mother's house, and really wanted me to take this home. Getting rid of the three floors of a lifetime's collection of antiques, art, clothes, was an emotionally charged task for her I knew, and it was becoming awkward, my resistance.
And so even in this bitter cold, I have not been able to bring myself to wear my new 40 year old fur coat outside.
But it is the warmest coat.
And the loveliest.

Beautiful picture and coat. Nice to add the story. Furcoats are the warmest and last the longest, but they are not always easy to wear for other reasons...
ReplyDeleteLovely coat. And great take for this week!
ReplyDeleteI did Photo Hunters, too. I hope you get a chance to visit!
http://newyorktraveler.net/photo-hunters-furry/
Happy weekend!
oh...I understand. beautifully written
ReplyDeleteBe careful where you wear your fur coat. There are few people who appreciate them any more, even if it is 40 years old.
ReplyDeleteLooking at your recent pictures it looks like you could use a fur coat where you live!...People either love them or hate them...
ReplyDeleteI had a fur jacket once, but it wasn't a very well-made one and every time I wore it, I shed. Also, it wasn't very practical in the West Coast rains. But I think you should wear your fur coat. It was made to be worn, and if questioned, you could always lie and say it's fake.
ReplyDeleteIs it real fur?
ReplyDeleteSomeone had my MIL turn a real mink coat into a teddy bear for her because....we live in Savannah GA and there is NO need for a fur coat around here.
Mine is up at http://myordinarythings.blogspot.com/2009/01/31365.html
Your photohunt this week looks an awful lot like mine.
ReplyDeleteWhat an outstanding coat! I agree with pinklea; wear it and lie.
ReplyDeleteThanks for visiting Brita and yes, those other reasons...thogh not wearing it will only make it more of a waste. And yes, Irene I suppose there are a few outh there, though I have read recently that some furriers are claiming 'preloved' furs are selling well.
ReplyDeleteThanks Mrs Mecomber, it seems to be a different take from most of the other entries. Will come by yours next.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Char, I was waiting for this photohunt theme to include this story. Yes, Noner it is real fur, and I also have a friend who has a gorgeous mink teddy bear made out of an inherited jacket. And there has been the weather for it here, Oliag!! As it hangs in my bedroom, I'm beginning to love it.
ReplyDeletePinklea and miwise I could easily do that, if anyone were rude enough to comment ... I just have to get over the conspicuousness of it!
ReplyDeleteThat's funny, AliceAudrey, and this one even matches my own furcat!
ReplyDeleteNo one wears them here, even in the depths of winter. (Not that our winters are anywhere NEAR the depths of yours!!) It's that whole animal rights thing.
ReplyDeleteYou could always keep it as a guilty pleasure... swish around in it when you're at home and pretend you're a 50s movie star.

Yes, I obviously felt the need to say that twice.
ReplyDelete(oops)
I like the idea of swishing like a movie star, Frogdancer, I have the martini glasses ready...
ReplyDeleteNot sure I would wear fur but seeing as it is dead & gone, well you might as well wear it & keep warm! Nice photo.
ReplyDeleteThat's a bit like my thinking as well, Maggie May (crass as that sounds)
ReplyDeleteI think you should wear it....ala nude underneath! I can't think of a more decadent and luxurious thing to do with a coat you don't want to antagonize anyone with. Sip a martini while you're doing it! And by all means, invite someone over to enhance the experience! ;)
ReplyDeleteIt looks like you could wear it to and from your car...
ReplyDeleteoohhh Susan putting decadent ideas in my head...
ReplyDeleteDelwyn I actually need to run out on an errand and have been putting it off for hours as it is so cold and windy outside, so maybe I should...
ReplyDeletewonderful coat. And I'm not from PETA, so I am happy for you -- he said acceptingly.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Ian.
ReplyDeleteIt is a wonderful coat.
I hate being so ambivalent about it.
It does look awfully cozy and warm. Too many environmentalists here to be able to wear it out in public, though.
ReplyDeleteNice photo and story about the coat. That is a difficult choice, especially if you are against wearing fur. I think you did the right thing.
ReplyDeleteThat coat is gorgeous! If I had one, I would be wearing it to do grocery shopping! lol...My hunt is up, please come and visit soon
ReplyDeleteI really like your version of Furry! and your story :)
ReplyDeleteIt's great to see something diffrent then cats and dogs.. though they ARE cute! and i LOVE them of course :)
I hope to see you next week! :)
Have a nice sunday! :)
It's a terrific coat. In fact, I'd wear it (the beard might help me carry it off). Any moral choices are about influencing the future, not re-writing the past.
ReplyDeleteVery nice, just keep an eye out for those PETA creeps... :-)
ReplyDeleteWearing this lovely fur coat in Amsterdam could lead to attacks by local environmentalist nut cases,
ReplyDeletebut,
given it's part of someones past/memories I'd wear it everyday in that freezing cold over there.
Would you be safe wearing lovely antique fur coats where you live?
I would be the same way. They're so soft and warm, but so many reasons not to wear it out. I have a mink collar that was my grandma's, which I keep in a drawer to touch now and then.
ReplyDeleteI would wear it. I love fur. If you don't want, I'll take it. he he. It is beautiful.
ReplyDeleteThanks Vita, and I'll be back.
ReplyDeletePeter, Pink, Ed, there aren't many PETA types around here, so I think I'm safe that way!
Ruth, I have this on my dressmakers dummy in the bedroom and I give it a caress every time I walk by!
girasoli, I think so too, my problem also is I am not the 'dressy' type - but that could change, I know!
I think you have the right attitude, Brother Tobias, but I maybe a beard might detract from its beauty.
Powers TwinB and Connie I think I should wear it to visit Ian so he can admire it.
