colouring in the lines

A memory I have from when I was young is of a deep despair when my colouring books were all coloured in and there were no more pages left to fill. Big, fat books they were as I recall. And, I was definitely one of those stay inside the lines colourists! So, you'd think I would be even a little excited about this recent adult colouring craze. There are books galore of almost every topic out there to instil creativity, or find your inner child, or whatever. Supposedly they are to induce calm and relaxation. Yeah, I also know people who knit for relaxation and truly, I cannot think of anything more frustrating than knitting. Except maybe colouring these new colouring books. Though, admittedly, I haven't really tried.

Maybe it's because they are so detail oriented. And tiny. Colouring postcards are also popular and this is one I received today from Sofiya. Perhaps I should buy myself some of the special pens/pencils you need and give it another try? I do like Matryoska dolls...

Interestingly, I also received these two cards - the same one - this past week.
How cool to see how differently each one has been coloured.

  1. My Mum bought herself a colouring book, but I haven't seen any results yet. She'd been doing jigsaws but thought this would be better because it took up less room!

    1. I do enjoy jigsaws, but yes, a big table is needed!

  2. Lovely, but staying within the lines is so overrated.

    1. It shows that my preferred artistic style was formed even at a young age. Anything too freeform makes me feel uneasy.

  3. I have one of these books, bought on a whim and barely touched. One day I will return to it.

    1. Maybe that's why there are so many around in stores - people buy them on a whim and don't ever use them so don't go back to buy more...

  4. I have several friends who are loving coloring in their books. I can see them staying in the lines, yes, but I suspect both might have purple polka-dotted frogs, rainbow colored leaves, and all sorts of strange color choices, just to express that rebel inside... I teach a creativity workshop to encourage people to just PLAY with paints, paper, pens, art. No rules. No criticism allowed--ESPECIALLY of yourself. It really is quite the phenomenon... and seems to draw only women. Does it make you wonder what it is that is the real draw there? We know it does nothing to increase brain function, but still it draws people. Is it that very idea of PLAYING? Of doing something just because it is fun and pretty and has absolutely nothing to do with serving anyone at all? Don't know.

    1. Interesting theories - though i can think of other fun and pretty things to do that have nothing to do with serving anyone. And now that you mention it, I can't see too many men being interesting in this craze!
