Today is May two-four.
This weekend is the unofficial beginning of summer, the weekend for planting your garden, the traditional opening of the cottage, 
the beginning of blackfly season.
It is celebrated often by the drinking of a traditional case of 24 beer. The beer store sales rise by about 20% this weekend. Thus, the play on words (in Eastern Canada, at least) of May two-four.
When I was young, the nickname for the holiday was Firecracker Day. That term has gone by the wayside now that backyard fireworks have been banned. And it is no longer the only day of the year for fireworks.

A holiday in these parts. And for once, the holiday celebrating Queen Victoria's birthday actually falls on her birthday.
She would be 191 years old this year. She reigned for 63 years, 216 days.

A Way to Have A Happy July First
Classic Caesar Recipe• 4 oz. Clamato Cocktail
• 1.5 oz vodka
• 2 dashes Worcestershire sauce
• 1 dash Tabasco sauce
celery salt
celery stalk
lime wedge
pepper to taste
pinch salt to taste
Mixing instructions:
Rim a highball glass with lime, celery salt, and salt.
Add vodka and juice to ice,
and season with pepper, Worcestershire sauce, and Tabasco.
Roll gently to mix flavours and then garnish with a celery stick.
Sit back in a chair on the lawn and enjoy.
Repeat as many times as necessary.

First Monday In August Holiday
Last night, a bonus. Fireworks at 9:30 pm. What the celebration is for is unclear.
Today is another holiday in these here parts. Not a Stat Holiday. A Civic Holiday.
It is Natal Day in some parts of the Maritimes. Heritage Day in Alberta. It is known simply as Civic Holiday in NWT, Nunavut and Ontario. Except where it is known as something else. Like Simcoe Day in Toronto. Or if you live in Ottawa, where it is Colonel By Day. Or in Burlington where it is Joseph Brant Day. In Brantford it is Founders Day. This comes as a surprise to most people, who really only care that it is a day of no work.
Except it isn't really a day of no work for everyone. It may not even be a paid holiday, if you don't have to work.
This is all very confusing. And even a little banal.
Besides, doesn't everyone just call it the August Long Weekend?
