it is startling

I guess I can admit this here. My secret is out.
I have been known to talk to myself. Out loud. Though, with the proliferation of Bluetooths stuck in people's ears, it is not as strange a sight coming across someone in the grocery store talking out loud as it once was. Still, I do sometimes startle myself when I realize that I am thinking out loud.

The other night I was caught by a dog walker who was laughing so hard his dog turned to look quizzically at him.
"Did you just apologize to that rabbit?"
"Well, yes, I did."
I startled the poor little guy, who went scurrying off, so it only seemed polite. And a natural thing to do.
I am Canadian, afterall.

Yesterday, I met up with the dog walker in the elevator.
"Still scaring the bunnies?" he asked.
It wouldn't have been so bad if there weren't other people in the elevator.

  1. We Canadians are a strangely polite bunch.

  2. Do you mean to imply that there are some people out there who do NOT talk to themselves? And that they actually think it's FUNNY when the rest of us DO? I am shocked! What is this world coming to?!

  3. Delores: if we have to be strange about anything, this is a good one!

    Pinklea: erm, maybe?

  4. I laughed and laughed. Here in Australia the mere notion of talking to a rabbit is unthinkable. We have Dalek type reactions to rabbits.

  6. I speak out loud silently. That is almost just as weird, I think. I don't know why I do that. I guess I am the shy and retiring kind. XOX

  7. Nora: I do actually 'whisper' when I am in the grocery store. I am certainly quieter than people talking on their cells! Though, obviously I wasn't whispering to the rabbit.

  8. I do this all. the. time.

I mutter to myself as I review a grocery list in my head, talk through things I'm trying to figure out, talk out loud to birds and animals I encounter. And you know what? I don't feel the least bit embarrassed about that. What's wrong with being talkative and friendly?

  9. I much prefer Canadian politeness than the recent U.S. Black Friday shopping riot behaviour.

  10. I do the same thing. I console myself by hoping they'll think I'm talking in a bluetooth.

What a stupid name by the way. Bluetooth. Why?

  11. I love it! I sing out loud to the music in the grocery store and sometimes dance along with it as well. I get all sorts of looks, but usually I get smiles.

  12. LOL! That's a funny story.
At work, I often say what I'm doing out loud, people think I'm nuts but it helps me focus. :)
