a little perspective, please

I had a couple days of self indulgence in agonizing over what, for many, might seem a luxury. A trip overseas for a wedding. Then I read the most recent posting of an Iraqi girl who is desperate to simply go to school and live a normal life without the stresses and horrors of the life that is in her homeland.

Have a wander over and read Sunshine's blog called Days of My Life. I have been reading her posts for several months, sometimes with awe, sometimes anguish. While simply telling it like it is, as seen through the eyes of a teenager, she puts shame to some of our worries, our complacencies. This isn't her intent at all, but you cannot read of her experiences without feeling some of that.

  1. I don't know. Something about that blog seems fake. I hope I'm wrong, but it just doesn't ring true to me. Anyway, I hope everything is well with you and your friend and your trip.

  3. Well, all I can say is that I'm happy you're happy. We all have friends who will try to make us happy but it doesn't jive too much. Does that make them bad people? not at all. Does this make that next time you hear "oh let me help you with this" you will remember, pause, think and say "no thanks, I've arranged it already"? I hope yes.

I'm glad we were able to help you with your venting. I know you'll have a great time with everyone in England. And I look forward to your posts. I'll go check that blog.

  5. UA: Don't get me wrong, I am VERY appreciative of his help. I just wish he was better at communicating. He is a good person, and has his heart in the right place.

  6. It looks like a genuine blog to me, why wouldn't it? Is it so far from our reality that we can not imagine that people live lives like this? Maybe we need to pay closer attention to in depth reporting that is done in Iraq, but doesn't make the 6 o'clock news.

I am puzzled as to what Urban Animal is talking about. I can't make sense of it whatsoever, but assume you weren't asking me about that.

By the way, there used to be a really good young Iraqi woman called Riverbend who did a great job of blogging straight from Baghdad. I don't know if she is around anymore. I think she may have quit, because all of her own stories made her very sad and discouraged.

  7. Irene, I'm sorry you cannot make sense whatsoever of my comment :) Makes perfect sense to me and Violetsky too (based on her response to me).

Her friend offered to help but he fucked up a bit and gave her real grief in the process. What I said is the next time said friend offers to help, a no thank you might be the best answer she gives him.

    Clearer?

  11. I just read through the last several posts, and it wsa interesting to watch the evolution of the problem and your feelings about it. I know eactly what you mean - I always have mixed feelings aout someone who means well and yet does something that is not the most helpful.

  12. Citizen: and once I've calmed down, I feel guilty as if I'm an ungrateful bitch.
